Everything you need to know about gas boiler maintenance

While few people are aware of the legal obligation to have their boiler serviced by a professional, it is essential to understand why this maintenance is mandatory and, above all, the benefits of doing so.

FOR WHOM?

Regulations require you to have your installation serviced every year. This obligation is enshrined in law, specifically in decree n°2009-649 of June 9, 2009. The latter does not provide for a fine or criminal penalty in case of non-compliance. This obligation is valid regardless of the energy you use. Likewise, it is valid for all types of appliances:

  • Simple boilers, which only provide heating

  • Combi boilers, which provide domestic hot water and heating

  • Hybrid boilers, coupled with another heating system.

However, if you do not do it, you may be held liable in the event of an accident. The operation must be carried out by your heating technician.

WHY?

Regular maintenance first and foremost guarantees your safety, which is why it is mandatory. The heating technician checks that your appliance does not emit a significant amount of air pollutants that would be dangerous to your health. Carbon monoxide poisoning is common and often results from poor maintenance of heating systems. They then perform adjustments so that the operation of your installation is adapted to your needs. The annual maintenance, lasting about 1 hour, allows for:

  • Limiting the number of breakdowns and health risks (up to 5 times less)

  • Detecting potential malfunctions

  • Avoiding overconsumption, as a poorly maintained boiler consumes more fuel to operate

  • Achieving energy savings.

WHEN?

We recommend carrying out maintenance before the heating season. Spring and summer are ideal times. Since your boiler has been running all winter, it is useful to have it serviced before the next cold period. This prevents it from breaking down when you need it most.

The heating technician performs several check points. They clean various elements of the appliance: the heating body, the burner, the pilot light, the extractor... They also check the safety devices of your equipment.

At the end of the service, they will give you a maintenance certificate that you must then keep for two years.
